Wine storage temperature and temperature indicators

The temperature of the cellar or warehouse where the wine is stored is of vital importance to guarantee that its qualities remain unaltered. Wine is quite a delicate product; therefore, any temperature changes can affect its taste. If it is not cared for and stored properly, its composition will be affected, leading to faster deterioration. For these reasons, we must take care of aspects such as the storage temperature for red from the time it is made.

A wine thermometer is a great ally when it comes to taking care of this product. However, knowing the ideal values for its storage is required. This way, we can control them and avoid the wine’s premature deterioration.

What is the storage temperature of red wine?

One of the essential factors for wine preservation is temperature. It should be between 10 and 15 °C, but these values must be kept constant. Therefore, low temperatures encourage wine preservation over time. If properly cared for, this product can remain unaltered for decades or even improve its qualities.

Ideally, the thermal variation in the bottle should be minimal, as this will affect the wine permanently. For example, wine should not be stored in the kitchen, as temperatures can fluctuate too much during the day depending on the use of this space. This is the reason why cellars are built. When wine is stored in the right place, the temperature naturally remains stable for long periods of time.

However, a good refrigerator or large fridge can be used to store wine bottles without any problem, especially if they are not going to be used continuously. If these appliances are not available, a medium-sized equipped basement or a storage room can serve as a cellar. Additionally, these spaces usually maintain a stable humidity, and there are no strong drafts that alter the small prevailing ecosystem.

Means to control wine temperature

By using a wine thermometer, we can control the proper preservation of wine at all times. These devices are very sensitive and measure any changes that may occur. However, for greater accuracy, the use of temperature labels is recommended. These contain a liquid that reacts to temperature variations. Thanks to these labels, we can easily know when there are any alterations and address them quickly.

In short, the temperature at which the wine is stored must be stable at all times. Otherwise, the result may be affected due to undesirable changes. By taking care of the temperature of red wine stored in cellars, it can be consumed during long periods of time, and it will improve its qualities.
